times reflected in an interesting selection of museums, antebellum
mansions, exquisite gardens and historic districts. Florence was

first railroad here and was founder of the city and also a lieutenant
governor of South Carolina.

Florence grew as a railroad junction and was a major
rail center for the transport of men and military supplies during
the Civil War. The surrounding rural area first grew mainly cotton
and tobacco, whose popularity contributed to the area’s
rapid development after the War. Florence officially became a
town with 700 residents in 1871 and Florence County was formed
in 1888.

Although the importance of the railroads have diminished
in modern times, her location at the crossroads of I-95 and I-20
have spurred her growth, making her the 7th largest city in the
State and a center of commerce, medical, retail and professional
